The two models – 338R and 500R – in the works are being developed in partnership with Qianjiang, owner of the Benelli and QJMotor

News on smaller, more affordable Harley-Davidson bikes has been simmering for a while now. The American bikemaker had signed a deal with China’s Qianjiang in 2019 (owner of Benelli and QJMotor) to produce and sell small-capacity Harleys across China and Southeast Asia. And in a recent development, it appears as if two bikes from the partnership are a step closer to being finished.

Both upcoming motorcycles – 338R and 500R – are likely to use revised versions of the parallel twin engines we’ve already seen in the Benelli lineup. This should help Harley-Davidson explore new markets while keeping the cost of developing two models from the ground up low.

Earlier this year we got spy shots of a 500cc Harley-Davidson being tested. Under the skin the motorcycle was seen sporting hardware we’ve seen on the Benelli Leoncino 500, suggesting the 500cc model – Harley-Davidson 500R – could be the first to arrive followed by the 338R cruiser.

Hence, it can be said Harley-Davidson’s intention on entering the sub-500cc market with relatively accessible motorcycles is now more serious than ever. What does this mean for India? Nothing actually. Because, the American bikemaker is co-developing a bike with Hero MotoCorp, which could hit markets here in the first half of 2024.
