Which of these two retro-styled scooters offers the perfect throwback?
The iconic Vespa brand, owned by Piaggio, set in motion a new perspective in the scooter culture of the country when it made its comeback in 2012. It encouraged buyers to look at scooters from beyond the scope of utility, offering products that were both functional and aesthetic.
With Keeway’s recent decision to enter India and include the Sixties 300i, the country’s most powerful retro-scooter, to its portfolio, the segment just got a bit more flavourful. So, let’s have a quick look at how the Vespa Racing Sixties 150 stacks up against its Hungarian rival:
Both scooters feature a similar styled fascia that pack strong retro elements fused with the latest functional hardware. Case in point, the rounded apron and fender that complement the squared-off LED headlight rather nicely on both the scooters. However, one noteworthy difference here is that the Vespa gets a hydraulic single-side arm front suspension which provides a clean look at the front alloy, whereas the Keeway scooter gets a dual telescopic fork at the front.
The Keeway Sixties 300i features a Cadillac-inspired grill that also houses the turn indicators. The red mesh grill, along with a 3D embedded logo, conveys the retro 60s design perfectly. The Vespa Racing Sixties 150 on the other hand has a faux air intake on the front apron, coupled with long turn indicators and some stripes to give it a sporty look.
The Sixties 300i is powered by a 278cc liquid-cooled, single cylinder engine that produces 18.7PS and 22Nm, when compared to the Vespa Racing Sixties 150, which is propelled by 149.5cc air-cooled, single cylinder engine that produces 10.3PS and 10.6Nm. Furthermore, the Sixties 300i also gets LED tail lights complemented with chrome side accents, while the Vespa features an old school tail lamp and turn indicators coupled with the race stripes running through the centre.
The instrument clusters on both scooters continues the fusion of modern and retro elements as they comprise of a digital and analogue readout. The Keeway Sixties 300i comes equipped with ambient temperature gauge, tripmeter, fuel gauge and maintenance indicator. The Vespa Racing Sixties 150 on the other hand only gets a fuel gauge, odometer and clock.
The Hungarian retro scooter comes equipped with a generous 10 litre fuel tank and the underseat storage that looks large enough to easily fit a half-face helmet. The Italian retro scooter on the other hand gets a 7.4 litre fuel tank, and also offers decent underseat storage.
The Sixties 300i also gets an LED headlight with a massive DRL that gives a modern touch to an otherwise classic design. The Vespa on the other hand also gets an LED headlight with LED DRL running across the width of the headlight, and looks old-school.
The Keeway Sixties 300i is priced at Rs 2,99,000 (ex-showroom), while the Vespa Racing Sixties 150 is priced at Rs 1,48,000 (ex-showroom). While the Keeway Sixties 300i packs a lot of features and is more powerful, it is more than twice the price of the Vespa Racing Sixties 150, which makes the Italian a very good value for money proposition if you’re in the market for a sporty retro scoot.
