After Bajaj, Mahindra might be the second major auto giant to bring an all-electric scooter in India. According to some reports, Mahindra is planning to unveil a Gusto-based electric scooter by the first half of 2020 (probably before the upcoming Auto Expo). The upcoming electric scooter could retail at around Rs 80,000 (including FAME II benefits).
Mahindra already manufacturers the Peugeot E-Ludix scooter at its Pithampur facility and it has also dipped its toes in this segment with the Genze. So it’s fair to say that Mahindra isn’t a new player when it comes to manufacturing electric scooters.
The upcoming electric is believed to be powered by a 3kW motor and will have a top speed of around 55-60kmph. Expect the e-scooter to offer a range of around 80km, which is 15km less than what the Chetak is offering. What else do we know about this mystery scooter? Well, not much. However, we can expect Mahindra to equip it with an LED lighting system, a fully digital instrument console, rider models and Bluetooth connectivity.
In a recent interview, Anand Mahindra said that entering the two-wheeler segment was a mistake as its scooters and motorcycles failed to make a mark due to the tough competition. And even though Mahindra is entering a new segment, the competition is just as fierce as before (if not more) as the number of e-scooter manufacturers in India has risen rapidly within the last 3-4 years.
