Piaggio is finally bringing its two most exotic scooters - 300 GTS and 946 to India this year. The scooters will come as Completely Built Units (CBUs) and hence, you can expect their price to be a bit higher than your imagination. The premium scooters are expected to arrive by the second quarter of this year and will be available at selected Vespa and Motoplex outlets. Needless to say, these Vespas would be the most expensive and premium scooters in the country and hence, will open a completely new category in India, once launched.
The two were displayed at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo that was held in Noida last month. The company is also eyeing for a larger dealer network for better sales and has plans to open new Motoplex stores in Cochin, Chennai and Hyderabad by June 2016 and increase its number of stores to 110 by 2016 end.
Regarding this, Mr. Stefano Pelle, Chief Executive Officer, Piaggio vehicles India stated, “Yes, we are looking at bringing the Vespa limited editions. We plan to bring the Vespa 300GTS and the Vespa 946, which will come as CBUs. They will come by the second quarter of the ongoing calendar year. My priority for 2016 is setting up the distribution network and launching the Aprilia scooter (SR 150). I would say that it would go hand-in-hand. To launch this scooter on the road, we have to increase our distribution. Vespa, on the other hand, continues to be our main brand, so that remains our priority. As of today our network is around 80 dealers (concentrated towards the southern and western markets). We have looking at having up to 40 percent more dealerships (32) by end 2016.”
Now, coming to the main factor i.e. price, the Vespa 300 GTS is expected to come holding a price tag of Rs. 4.65 lac. The 946, on the other hand, will cost you some more bucks and would be priced at Rs. 7 lac, as per standard conversion rates. Now, considering the taxes and other duties the manufacturer has to pay, the price will go up to somewhere around Rs. 10 lac. Now, that would be interesting to see what category of buyers opt for these scooters when they can go for high-end sportbikes at the same price. Stay tuned!
