The 2020 Suzuki Swish has been launched in Taiwan at TWD 79,800, which is around Rs 2 lakh. So what does the 2020 iteration pack? Will it ever head to our shores? Well, here’s a detailed explanation as to what this sporty-looking 125cc scooter is all about:
Is it related to the Suzuki Swish that was once sold in India?
Simply put, no. The Suzuki Swish that was sold in India was actually the Access 125’s slightly sporty-looking sibling. It was discontinued in early 2017 due to lack of demand. The Suzuki Swish that has been recently launched in Taiwan is a completely different model. In fact, it made its global debut at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. The scooter gets a completely new design and looks a lot sportier than the one sold in our shores.
So what’s new in the 2020 Swish 125?
The 2020 iteration of the Suzuki Swish 125 comes in three new dual-tone colours: blue and silver, red and black, and white and grey. The blue and silver colour variant, in particular, appears to be inspired by Suzuki’s 2020 MotoGP livery. With the three new colours, the total colour options now stand at five. Depending on the colour, the Swish 125 also comes with colour-coded highlights on the alloy wheel, front disc brake caliper and rear shock absorber. Apart from the new colour options, the scooter remains the same as its predecessor in terms of mechanicals.
Powertrain & Underpinnings:
The Suzuki Swish 125 employs a 124cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine, which generates 9.4PS at 7000rpm and 10Nm at 6000rpm. To give you a perspective, the Suzuki Access 125 BS6 sold in India makes 8.7PS and 10Nm. The brand claims a mileage figure of 51.1kmpl for the Swish 125. That’s pretty good for a 125cc scooter. Suzuki has equipped the scooter with dual throttle lines, which is claimed to offer a crispier throttle response. Moreover, it also acts as a safety measure in case one of the throttle cable snaps.
Underpinnings include a telescopic front fork and twin rear three-step preload adjustable shock absorbers. It rolls on 10-inch alloy wheels wrapped with decently fat 100-section tyres on both ends. The scooter comes to a halt using a front disc and a rear drum. There’s no CBS as the local laws in Taiwan don't prescribe the need for it.
Features galore:
The Suzuki Swish 125 not only looks sporty but is also loaded with thoughtful features. The scooter comes with sleek LED headlamp with DRLs and LED tail lamp. However, indicators are of bulb type, presumably to keep costs low. It also gets a full-LCD instrument cluster which shows details like fuel level, speed, odometer, trip meter readings and oil-change reminder. It isn’t smartphone-compatible, though.
For better practicality, it gets an apron-mounted fuel filler cap, apron-mounted utility hook and a storage bin with integrated USB port. The underseat storage is fairly generous and can easily accommodate a half face helmet with some room to spare for small knick-knacks. For better comfort, the floorboard comes with anti-skid textures and the seat gets a large yet stylish looking single-piece grab rail. It also gets a hazard lamp function and Suzuki Easy Start system to ensure the motor cranks up at the press of the starter button.
Will it come to India?
Suzuki is unlikely to launch the Swish 125 in our market. One of the main reasons could be the fact that the Japanese brand has been following the tradition of launching products that are developed specifically for our market. In fact, all the current Suzuki two-wheelers under 250cc that are sold in India have been developed specifically for our market.
The Suzuki Swish 125 was earlier expected to arrive in India at the 2018 Auto Expo but Suzuki gave us the Burgman Street instead. It was a good move business-wise as the brand restarted the maxi-style scooter segment in India after the discontinuation of the Kinetic Blaze left a void in the market.
