The run-of-the-mill commuters didn’t turn out to be the crowd favourite

Two-wheeler sales took a big hit last month, thanks to the restrictions imposed due to the pandemic. While the dip in numbers was across all the segments, the 150cc-200cc segment registered better sales compared to the regular 100cc commuters. Here’s how the 125cc motorcycles fared last month:

Honda CB Shine

The Bajaj Pulsar 125 Neon and Pulsar NS 125 topped the sales chart, not just by overselling their rivals but also accounting for 72 percent of the total Pulsars sold. Though the number has dipped from 35,891 units sold in April, the Pulsar siblings still have an edge over their competition.

The Hero Super Splendor, at 16,392 units, has done decent sales for the month, however, its sales have dropped by 51 percent compared to April. Furthermore, Hero MotoCorp has announced that the brand will hike the prices of all the products across its portfolio July onwards, which is likely to further affect sales.

The story was no different for the Honda CB Shine. From a respectable 79,416 units in April, its sales dipped to 14,666 in May. However, the Shine had been consistently raking in good numbers prior to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, selling 1.17 lakh units in March 2021, and we expect the numbers to shoot back up in the coming months.

Thanks to the rising prices and lockdown restrictions, Hero MotoCorp’s premium commuter, the Glamour, too has witnessed a drop in sales. That said, the Indian two-wheeler giant is all set to roll out a new variant of the Glamour, and going by the leaks, it is likely going to be the first motorcycle in the segment to feature bluetooth connectivity. The Glamour X-Tec will certainly give a boost to this bike’s sales soon.

Once known for its value-for-money offerings, KTM is losing its edge with the frequent price hikes, and it is evident in the sales figures. Once the best-seller for the Austrian brand, the 125 Duke and even the RC 125 have managed to collectively sell only 271 units.
