The innovative American two wheeler manufacturer, UM motorcycles is all set to launch the Renegade series of bikes in India. For now the manufacturer looking for a channel partner, which will be declared soon. We did an exclusive interview where Mr. Rajiv Mishra, Director of the UM India said that the company is in talks with two different companies, and one will be finalised for a joint venture by the end of April.
UM Renegade comes in total 4 trims- Limited, Commando, Sport and Duty, which are expected to be priced in a range from Rs. 1-1.5 lakh. There bikes will directly compete with Bajaj Avenger and Royal Enfield bikes, while also share the market with other 200-250cc bikes. The company is also working on two higher capacity engine to target the 300-400cc segment, which might follow the Renegade with other important models like Xtreet and Hypersport.
The new engines including a 350cc, liquid-cooled V-twin will be developed locally in their Indian R&D facility in Delhi. Initially the bikes will be imported via CKD route and the company targeting around 50% localised production to keep the costs low.
Mr. Mishra said, "We are going to establish a brand value in India, and that is the reason, we are entering with a rare segment, only offered by Royal Enfield and Bajaj Auto. There are many high end cruising bikes available in India from Harley Davidson, Indian Chief, Triumph Motorcycles etc., however, these bikes are very expensive and out of the reach of common people. After achieving an equity share in the market and creating a base, we will also introduce 100-125cc motorcycles, which are largely sold in Africa."
He added further, "We are also looking to establish a manufacturing unit, which will be producing 5000 units a month intially. The production capacity will be increased in future and we are also planning to export vehicles to other South Asian countries as well."
Aim of the company is clear for the Indian market that they will bring entry level performance bikes first, followed by commuter bikes and then it will introduce bikes between 300-400cc.
