Apache 180 Expert Review
Overview
The TVS Apache RTR 180 is a motorcycle that blends sporty design with practical performance. Popular among young riders, the Apache RTR 180 is a niche premium commuter in the rather sparse 180cc category, thus offering higher performance than the usual 160cc commuters.
Design
The TVS Apache RTR 180 shares its entire design with the less powerful Apache RTR 160 2V. It also gets a large LED headlight and a stylish fuel tank with sleek extensions that give it a sporty appearance. According to TVS, the design of tank extensions enhances airflow to the engine for improved cooling.
The bike features a single-piece seat with a split grab rail at the back with its tail section ending with an LED tail lamp. Additionally, small details like the gold finish on the front fork and brake callipers contribute to a premium feel to the motorcycle.
Engine, Mileage & Performance
The TVS Apache RTR 180 has an air/oil-cooled, single-cylinder 177.4cc engine, which offers different characteristics in the three riding modes: Sport, Urban, and Rain.
n Sport mode, this engine produces a maximum power output of 17.02PS @9000 rpm and a maximum torque of 15.5Nm @7000 rpm. In Urban and Rain modes, it delivers a slightly reduced maximum power output of 14.55PS @8200 rpm and a maximum torque of 14.2Nm @6000 rpm. The engine is paired with a five-speed gearbox.
The 180cc engine operates smoothly at low revs, but vibrations become noticeable at higher RPMs, which can be bothersome. Despite this, the bike offers ample power and performs excellently in city conditions, making it a dependable commuter option.
Handling & Ride Quality
The TVS Apache RTR 180 has great handling abilities due to its light kerb weight of just 140kg, making city rides effortless. Its suspension setup includes a telescopic fork at the front and gas-charged dual shock absorbers at the rear, which can easily absorb most road bumps.
The braking system of the Apache RTR 180 includes a 270mm petal disc at the front and a 200mm petal disc at the rear. It is equipped with single-channel ABS, which is standard for enhanced safety in varied riding conditions. While the overall braking performance is good, the RTR 180 shares a common issue with other Apache models: the lack of feel from the brake lever when precise braking is needed.
The Apache RTR 180 rides on 17-inch alloy wheels fitted with a 90/90-17 tyre at the front and a 110/80-17 tyre at the rear. These tyres offer sufficient grip and instill confidence while cornering
Comfort
The TVS Apache RTR 180 offers a well-cushioned single seat that ensures rider and pillion comfort, even on long journeys. Its seat height of 790mm is within reach for riders of different heights. Although the bike has a sporty riding posture with clip-on handlebars, its balanced ergonomics ensure it remains comfortable for extended periods.
Features
The TVS Apache RTR 180 is decently packed with features, including an LED headlight and taillight. The fully digital instrument cluster offered as standard in the Apache RTR 180 also has smartphone connectivity via TVS's SmartXonnect system, which provides voice assist, turn-by-turn navigation, and ride stats. Additionally, it comes with three riding modes—Sport, Urban, and Rain—which allow you to adjust power delivery and ABS sensitivity as per your needs.
A unique feature, aptly named 'Glide Through Technology’, makes city commutes easier by automatically engaging the throttle a little to maintain a low speed when crawling through traffic.
Should you buy
The TVS Apache RTR 180, priced at Rs 1,32,220 (ex-showroom, Delhi), is a value-for-money choice considering its features and performance capabilities.
The added performance over the usual 150-160cc motorcycles, while not costing much more than them, makes the Apache RTR 180 an excellent value-for-money bike.
However, some may find the engine refinement not up to par compared to other bikes from TVS. Its design might seem outdated for some buyers compared to newer options like the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V, which closely matches price and performance. However, it still holds its own in terms of overall utility and functionality.

- Best for City rides
Apache RTR 180 is a powerful bike for city traffic and quick pick up while overtaking other vehicles. Pickup performance is good even in high speed. In lower rpm the bike vibrates a bit. Braking is also good. For long rides it's not suitable. Best for city commute and short trips within 100kms. For long rides it will be pain in the ass, need to stop at every 50kmsRead More
