Electric Bikes in India
Electric Bike Key Components
- Battery
The rechargeable battery is the power source of the electric two-wheeler and provides the fuel (electricity) to the electric motor. Modern electric bikes and scooters typically use a lithium-ion battery pack, which is usually the most expensive component in an electric two-wheeler. While they are much more affordable, these batteries are considerably heavier than lithium-ion units and take longer to charge.
- Motors
Electric motors replace the complex powertrains of conventional two-wheelers. Usually, manufacturers provide a chassis-mounted motor with a belt or in some cases, a chain drive. Some electric two-wheelers have hub motors. Electric motors have the advantage of immediate peak torque delivery and noiseless, pollution-free operation.
- Controller
All that immediate torque may not always be needed, so EVs come with a controller to regulate the flow of power from the battery pack to its motor. It computes usage with respect to the available battery charge and delivers power accordingly. This also opens up electric two-wheelers to various driving modes.
Electric vehicles Pros and Cons
- Pros
- Cons
Scooters are generally associated with urban runabouts and hence, it makes sense for brands to introduce electric options. Motorcycles are a different ballgame as the usage is always expected to be higher, and consequently, they’re expected to offer better range. The Indian two-wheeler segment is still some way from offering electric motorcycles that are good enough to replace a conventional petrol-powered two-wheeler.

Q) What are the advantages of an e-Bike over regular bikes?
A) There are fewer consumables on an electric bike. This means lesser maintenance hassles and costs. Also, the cost of running an electric bike is much less compared to a petrol-powered two-wheeler. In fact, for some electric two-wheelers, the running cost per km is almost 1/10th that of a petrol-powered bike or scooter.
Q) What is the range I can get from a single charge on an electric motorcycle?
A) The real-world range of most electric scooters in India today is somewhere between 75-90km. Electric motorcycles usually have a larger battery pack and can go up to 100-110km on a single charge. But these numbers are for high-speed and premium electric two-wheelers. More affordable electric vehicles have lesser range
Q) How long does it take to charge an e-bike’s battery?
A) Most electric bikes usually take 5-6 hours of charging time via a standard 5A wall charger. If the bike has fast charging compatibility, the charging time could be reduced to as low as 1 hour. The charging time varies between lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries and also the battery capacity.

Q) Do electric motorcycles have gears?
A) They do not have traditional gearboxes as of now. The transmission system may comprise of mechanical gears to transfer the power from the motor to the rear wheel efficiently.
Q) Do electric bikes/motorcycles make noise?
A) There is a whirring sound from the motor, or a whine that’s usually associated with belt drive systems. Certain electric motorcycles that use chain drive also have chain noise. That said, all of these noises are significantly more silent than conventional engines. If you are expecting a sound from your riding experience like an internal combustion two-wheeler, then you will be disappointed. However, the Revolt RV 400 offers the option of an artificial exhaust note using a speaker.
