Indian Two Wheeler Market: An Overview Of 2014-2015 And What To Expect From 2016

Over view of 2015

The year 2014-2015 has been a great time for the Indian two-wheeler Industry. During April-March 2015, more than 2.33 crore vehicles were manufactured in India out of which around 1.85 crores were two-wheelers. This means that 81 percent of the total automobile industry production in India for 2014-15 was captured by the two-wheeler segment including scooters, motorcycles and mopeds. 

Domestic Market share

Talking about the individual domestic sales of scooter, motorcycle and mopeds, they grew by 25.06 percent, 2.50 percent and 4.51 percent respectively in April-March 2015 over April-March 2014. While the overall domestic growth of the Indian two-wheeler industry registered at 8.09 percent. Various manufacturers sold 1,97,52,580 vehicles in the Domestic market, out of which 1,60,04,581 units were two-wheelers.

 

Two-wheeler segment also contributed a huge share to the export market of the Indian automobile industry where 35,73,806 vehicles were exported in 2014-2015 and 24,57,597 units among them were two-wheelers. Overall, the industry was seen a growth of 14.89 percent in export while the two-wheeler sector grew by 17.93 percent during April-March 2015 over the same period last year.

Indian Roadmaster

Coming to the launches of 2015, the Indian two-wheeler market received some very interesting products like the most expensive one- Indian Roadmaster and the cheapest motorcycle of the market- Bajaj CT 100. Three new brands entered the market including two Italian companies- Benelli and MV Agusta.

Bajaj Avenger

The market also received many value for money products in 2015 like Hero Maestro Edge, Bajaj Avenger 150 Street and Mahindra Mojo 300. Some memorable bikes launched in the year are Kawasaki Ninja H2 (the world’s fastest and only supercharged production motorcycle), Suzuki Gixxer SF (the most affordable full-faired motorcycle in the country), Benelli TNT 25 (the most affordable Italian motorcycle available in India) and others.

Yamaha R3

One of the most iconic motorcycles of the country- Hero MotoCorp Splendor also got its first major visual update in 2015. Among all the motorcycles launched in 2015, top three were selected for the final round of Indian Motorcycle Of The Year (IMOTY) 2016. The Yamaha YZF-R3 was declared the Indian motorcycle of the year while the other two- Benelli TNT 300 and Honda CBR650F received lots of appreciation from the jury.

Yamaha Saluto

On the other side, some manufacturers failed to impress buyers with their new products during this year. The more powerful Vespa scooters and Yamaha Saluto didn’t perform as expected. The updated TVS Phoenix and Honda CBR 250R & CBR 150R with new graphics also didn’t work well.

What Can We Expect From 2016:

Looking at the consistent growth of the Indian two-wheeler market, we can expect if to expand further next year at least by 7-9 percent. Some more international brands are expected to enter the country in 2016 like UM motorcycles and lots of amazing products are in the pipeline for the year. 

BMW G310

Some of the most awaited products that are expected to be launched in 2016 are Royal Enfield Himalayan, TVS Apache 200, Hero HX250R, Bajaj Pulsar CS 400, BMW G310R and UM Renegade. Along with these highly anticipated models, some other exciting products coming to the country in 2016 could be the updated TVS Apache series, Yamaha MT-03, Hyosung GT300R, Benelli Tornado 302, 2016 KTM RC 390, Bajaj’s low-cost naked sports bike and many others.

Yamaha India

 

We can also expect that 2016 could be a great year for the performance motorcycle segment. Good value for money products like Yamaha YZF-R1S that is a low-cost version of the new Yamaha R1 and Kawasaki Vulcan S will hopefully make it to Indian shores. We are even expecting some premium motorcycles like the are Honda CB650F, Indian Scout Sixty and the updated Hyosung GT650R.

MV Agusta F3  800

Kawasaki has already announced that they are bringing the 2016 Ninja ZX-10R and Ninja ZX-14R in India soon while MV Agusta is also launching the F3 800 along with a few more products in 2016. We can expect to see some of the bikes scheduled to be launched next year at the upcoming Auto Expo in February while a few may even be launched even before that.
