The Mahindra Mojo is all set to make a comeback with a BS6-compliant heart. Here’s what you could expect from the upcoming tourer
Mahindra’s flagship tourer is back! The brand has teased what looks like the Mojo’s more affordable UT variant via its social media channels. While a BS6 motor is pretty much a given, here’s what else you could expect from the upcoming tourer.
Why the UT variant?
The transition from BS4 to BS6 norms already takes a toll on the bike’s price thanks to the addition of fuel-injection, a remapped ECU and a larger catalytic converter. More often than not, this increases the price of the bike by approximately Rs 7,000 to 10,000. So bringing in the 2019 Mahindra Mojo 300 would render the bike an expensive proposition. The UT 300, on the other hand, is a cost-effective solution as it does away with the premium USD fork, Pirelli tyre, and the twin exhaust muffler design.
Minor Design Tweaks:
On the styling front, expect the Mojo to come with minor design tweaks and a couple of new paint options. The biggest giveaway of the bike in the teaser being the UT variant are the rim tapes. However, there is a possibility of Mahindra launching the top-spec variant with contrast-coloured wheels.
Revived Performance:
The BS4 Mojo UT 300 variant had a lower performance output as it used a carburettor instead of fuel injection in the top-spec model. It went from making 28PS and 30Nm of torque to a rather disappointing 23PS and 25.2Nm. That said, we could expect Mahindra to revert to the original power figures with the reintroduction of fuel-injection.
Retained Underpinnings:
Expect the hardware to be carried over from the older UT model, especially the twin-tube frame with a conventional telescopic fork and a monoshock. The bike is likely to ditch its Pirelli Angel CT tyres for MRF Nylogrip Zappers to keep costs in check. Anchoring the bike will be petal disc brakes at both ends paired with dual-channel ABS.
Expected Price:
Earlier, the Mahindra Mojo UT 300 retailed at Rs 1.65 lakh. But the additional cost of BS6 components could push the price of the 2020 Mojo UT 300 between Rs 1.75 lakh and 1.85 lakh (ex-showroom). Expect the bike to be launched towards the end of this month. Once here, it’ll compete against bikes like the Bajaj Dominar 250, Royal Enfield Classic 350 and the Suzuki Gixxer 250 in the booming 250-300cc space.
