Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the launch of the scooter has been delayed by over a month and a half
- Aprilia first showcased the SXR160 at Auto Expo 2020.
- It is based on the same platform as the racy SR160.
- The earliest we could now see the SXR160 on our streets is by September.
Piaggio wowed us with the Aprilia SXR160 at Auto Expo 2020. It was a departure from the ordinary for the Italian brand who, until then, had only offered sporty scooters like the SR160 and the SR125. So, this maxi-(ish-) scooter did pique curiosity. While it was planned to be introduced by mid-2020, the halting of production at the Baramati plant due to the COVID-19 lockdown has forced Piaggio to delay the launch of the scooter.
Aprilia wants to take its time to get the product right for the Indian market. The company was halfway into the process when the pandemic forced it to shut shop. Hopefully, with the lockdown now relaxed, we can expect Aprilia to resume operations and finish off the development of the scooter soon enough. Still, the SXR160 is only likely to hit Aprilia dealerships across the country by the end of September.
The Aprilia SXR160 uses the same underbone chassis and motor setup from the SR160. The motor, now in its BS6 guise, produces 11PS and 11.6Nm. It is likely that Aprilia will not tweak the motor for the SXR160. We still guess the riding experience of the scooter will be quite different as it is heavier and runs on smaller 12-inch rims.
Aprilia could price the SXR160 at a premium of Rs 15,000 over the SR160, which currently retails at Rs 1.03 lakh (ex-showroom Pune).
