It uses the same 1,252cc Revolution Max V-twin motor as the Pan America 1250
After venturing into uncharted territories with the Pan America 1250, Harley-Davidson is readying to release something a bit more traditional on July 13. The company has put out a teaser of a low-slung brat tracker-style cruiser, which could be the production-ready version of the Custom 1250 showcased a couple of years ago.
The tagline in the teaser, though, couldn’t have been more apt for the Custom 1250. It reads, ‘From Evolution To Revolution’. If you know your Harleys, then you would know that the Sportster series of bikes run with either 883cc or 1200cc V-twin engines, which are part of the Evolution family. There used to be a 1200 Custom running with the same engine. For the Custom 1250, it will be the 1,252cc Revolution Max V-twin engine from the Pan America 1250.

Speaking of which, this engine is a thoroughly modern unit; there’s liquid-cooling, 4-valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, and even ride-by-wire tech. It is a bit of a departure from the traditional 45-degree V-twins, though. The Vee angle of 60-degrees is reminiscent of the engine from the old V-Rod and Night Rod. So expect no potato-potato sound.
On the Pan America, the motor puts out 152.2PS at 9000rpm and 127Nm at 6750rpm. This could remain the same for the Custom 1250. Otherwise, Harley could choose to save costs by skipping VVT, and instead, give it bottom-heavy torque characteristics.
The hardware on the Custom 1250 will likely be as sophisticated as the motor with lots of fancy features thrown into the mix. Will that be enough for Harley to give the Indian FTR1200 a fight?
