Harley-Davidson LiveWire Production Temporarily Suspended

  • Harley-Davidson launched the LiveWire in the US in September.
  • Owners have been asked to charge their motorcycle only at Harley dealerships.
  • Harley-Davidson showcased the LiveWire in India on August 27.

Harley-Davidson has suspended production of its first electric cruiser motorcycle, the LiveWire. It launched the LiveWire in the US in September and a few customers have already purchased the motorcycle. The Milwaukee-based company stated it found a ‘non-standard condition’ on the LiveWire while it was undergoing final quality checks. According to Harley-Davidson, these customers can continue to ride the motorcycle, but they have been requested to avoid charging their motorcycles at home and instead charge their LiveWires at HD dealerships for now.

Harley-Davidson LiveWire Production Temporarily Suspended

According to sources, the recall is due to a potential issue in the battery charging system. The LiveWire can be charged in two ways. It has an onboard Level 1 charger that connects to a standard household power outlet or a Level 3 DC fast charger that charges the motorcycle upto 80 per cent in 40 minutes and upto 100 per cent in an hour. Since existing LiveWire customers have been asked to avoid charging at home, the issue could be with the Level 1 charging system.

Harley-Davidson has been tight-lipped about the issue and has not disclosed when the next lot of the LiveWire will be produced and delivered.

The LiveWire is Harley-Davidson’s first proper step towards electric mobility and an important product for the Milwaukee-based bikemaker. It had even unveiled the motorcycle in India on August 27 and could launch it here.
