Here’s an analysis of the capabilities of Hero’s new faired 200cc bike
Hero MotoCorp recently launched a faired iteration of the Xtreme 200R called the Xtreme 200S. Apart from the fairing, the bike comes with a couple of nifty features that enhances its everyday usability. Here are all the important aspects of the motorcycle which should help you make a more informed buying decision:
Pros:
Great value for money:
Hero MotoCorp has priced the bike at Rs 98,500 (ex-showroom Delhi). At this price point, it is the second-most affordable faired bike in the country after the Suzuki Gixxer SF. In fact, the Xtreme 200S is only Rs 424 more expensive and for that little premium, you get a larger engine that produces even more power and torque. Also, you get a modern-looking design complete with LED headlight, LED tail light and a comfortable yet slightly sporty riding ergonomics.

Instrument cluster loaded with practical features:
The Hero Xtreme 200S comes with the same fully digital instrument cluster as the XPulse 200. This unit comes with Bluetooth connectivity which enables the use of features like call alerts and turn-by-turn navigation. Additionally, the display also shows the gear position, tachometer, speedometer, dual trip meters with average speeds, time and date apart from the tell-tale lights.
Vast Dealership Reach:
One of the greatest advantages of buying a Hero product is the assurance of a vast dealer network. The sheer number of touchpoints across the country helps in easy purchase and service. Also, the availability of parts will be relatively easier and is also likely to be affordable than other premium brands.
Cons:
Underpowered engine:
The Xtreme 200S uses the same engine with identical tuning as its naked counterpart. With 18.4PS and 17.1Nm on tap, the engine’s performance is a bit better than other 160cc engines but it leaves a lot to be desired with respect to performance. The powerplant feels a bit out of breath while attempting to cruise at 100kmph. So if you’re looking for a good 200cc performance-oriented bike, you’re better off with either the Bajaj Pulsar RS200 or the TVS Apache RTR 200.
Could’ve come with FI:
Being a sporty-looking faired motorcycle, the Xtreme 200S could’ve come with fuel injection at least as an option. This feature would’ve helped in providing a smoother throttle response and slightly better performance - something that would have gone well with the bike’s intent and also to distinguish itself from the Xtreme 200R.
Only single-channel ABS:
Even though the Xtreme 200S sits above the 200R, Hero MotoCorp has equipped the bike with only a single-channel ABS. Though it is still better than not having ABS at all, the rear might lock up under hard braking, especially considering it comes with a 220mm disc.
Reason you should you buy it:
If you want a sporty-looking motorcycle that is comfortable enough for daily commutes under a lakh rupees, the Xtreme 200S makes a very solid case for itself. Though it has decent power for a 200cc bike, it isn’t exactly a hardcore performer like the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V. So if outright performance is your priority, you’d better look elsewhere.
