Harley is taking the fight to Royal Enfield with the X440
Harley-Davidson has launched its most affordable bike, the X440, at an astonishingly attractive price tag of Rs 2,29,000 (ex-showroom). In the retro roadster segment, it rivals the Royal Enfield Classic 350, so here’s how it fares against the iconic bike, in detailed images.
The Harley-Davidson X440, employs a muscular design language with neo-retro elements. It somewhat resembles the Harley-Davidson X440, with the beefy fuel tank and clean side panels.
The Royal Enfield Classic 350 sports a design unlike any other. The classy and retro styling elements on the Classic 350 stand out with its evergreen appeal, and the phrase ‘built like a gun’ perfectly befits its dominant stance. The circular headlight with the peaked nacelle, teardrop-shaped fuel tank and triangular side panel offers a clean and muscular look.
Powering the X440 is a two-valve 440cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine with an oil-cooler, which makes 27.4PS and 38Nm. This makes it significantly more powerful than the 349cc single-cylinder air-cooled mill from the Classic 350, which produces 20.2PS and 27Nm.
With a 43mm inverted fork and preload-adjustable gas-charged twin shocks, the X440 is quite premium. It features ByBre discs at both ends with dual-channel ABS as standard. It runs on 18-/17-inch alloys wrapped in new MRF Zapper Hyke tyres.
On the other hand, the Royal Enfield Classic 350 features a telescopic fork and 6-step preload-adjustable dual shock absorbers. Braking duties are handled by a 300mm disc up front and a 270mm disc (or 153mm drum) at the rear, depending on the variant.
In terms of features, the X440 comes with a TFT console. In addition to showing basic readouts, it gets smartphone connectivity with turn-by-turn navigation, music control, and call and message alerts.
The Classic 350 features a comparatively traditional analogue console with a speedo, and a digital inset that shows a tripmeter, fuel gauge, and service reminder. It also gets an optional Tripper navigation pod with smartphone connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation.
Prices for the Harley-Davidson X440 start at Rs 2,29,000, making it around Rs 37,000 more expensive than the Royal Enfield Classic 350’s base variant priced at Rs 1,93,080 (both ex-showroom). Now with the premium, you get more power, performance, premium components and lastly the Harley-Davidson brand name. And in that sense, the Harley-Davidson X440 is truly here to give the Classic 350 a run for its money.
