The new scooter will be designed in Italy but the electric powertrain and battery will be developed in India. To keep costs down, it is possible that the upcoming electric scooter will share the existing Vespa platform. Piaggio hinted that the electric scooter will share some components with the Vespa. That could include switchgear and underpinnings such as the suspension and braking components and even wheels and tyres. While the current Vespa scooters have metal bodywork, the upcoming electric scooter will get a fibre one. While no details about the powertrain are out yet, Vespa could look at the Elettrica, for inspiration. The Elettrica scooter gets a 4kW electric motor and has a 4kWh Lithium-ion battery pack that offers a range of 100km and charges fully in four hours.

Since the upcoming electric scooter will be made in India, we expect pricing to be competitive and in the range of the Ather 450X, Bajaj Chetak and TVS iQube. While Piaggio has not revealed a timeline for the electric scooter, we could see a finished product being unveiled at the next Auto Expo 2022.
