Now, fork out more for not following traffic rules

In the past few days, there has been a hue and cry about the new Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 that came into effect on September 1. The government is imposing severe penalties on motorists infringing road traffic rules. The fines have grown exponentially to which the Indian motorist is making much fuss about. However, given the fact that these penalties are for breaking the laws, one should focus on making the roads a safer place for all.

The new rules have increased the fines up to 10 times more than the previous penalties. For instance, a rider could be fined Rs 100 for not wearing a helmet while riding a bike. Now, the same offence attracts a fine of Rs 1,000 and/or disqualification of licence for three months as well as community service. Similarly, a fine of Rs 1,000 and/or punishment up to three months was applicable for riding an uninsured bike. However, now you will need to fork out a fine of Rs 2,000 and/or imprisonment of upto three months for not having an insurance cover.
