Confused which e-scooter you should be going for? We help you take a call
August 15, 2021 was a monumental day for India. Not only did it celebrate its 75th Independence Day, the Indian electric two-wheeler industry also witnessed the launch of the Ola Electric S1 Pro and the Simple One electric scooters. These two aim to offer a serious challenge to the Ather 450X, our current benchmark for premium electric scooters. Here’s a closer look at the three e-scooters so that you can narrow down yor choices to the one you should put your money on:
The Ola Electric S1 Pro has a very futuristic design, and unlike the other two e-scooters, has smooth, flowing lines. Ola Electric even offers the e-scooter in 10 vivid colour options. Meanwhile, the Simple Energy and Ather Energy e-scooters flaunt a sporty and edgy design. In fact, the Simple One even has small winglets.
Ola’s dual LED headlamp with the LED DRL surround is sure to grab eyeballs. Complimenting this is the set of sleek indicators and tail light. On the other hand, Simple One and the 450X sport a triangular LED headlight, which are eerily similar. However, both the e-scooter feature distinctly different tail lights.
There’s no denying that these e-scooters pack the most comprehensive instrument consoles in our market. Features like bluetooth connectivity, on-board navigation, and call/message alerts are common across the three e-scooters. However, Ola Electric has added themes, called ‘Moods’ which are individually customisable. Simple Energy too gives you an option to customise the instrument console, and can even have your digital copies of vehicle-related documents. Ather’s console falls short on this front.
The Ather 450X was our benchmark for electric scooters in India, until the Ola and the Simple Energy arrived at the scene. Ola Electric claims that its 5.5kW can sprint from 0-40kmph in 3 seconds, while the Simple One does the same run in 2.95 seconds. This makes the Simple One the quickest scooter in our market currently and is the only one using a chain final drive. That said, the Ola S1 Pro is the fastest e-scooter on sale, with a claimed top speed of 115kmph.
Ola Electric uses a 3.97kWh battery pack with a claimed range of 181km, while Simple Energy’s 4.8kWh promises a 203km range. The startup claims that the Simple One has the longest range seen in an e-scooter in the world. Ather Energy’s 91.4km range falls behind by a huge margin. Though Ather and Simple both have their battery pack in the floorboard, Simple One comes with a removable 7kg battery pack.
Ola’s cleverly designed ‘banana’ batteries fit between the seat and the floorboard, resulting in 36 litres underseat storage, the largest in our market. The Simple One closely follows, with 30 litres of storage capacity. Both the e-scooters offer way more space than Ather’s puny 21 litre underseat storage.
All the e-scooters get disc brakes at both ends. While the Ola Electric S1 Pro uses a 220mm/180mm setup, the Simple One comes with a 200mm/190mm setup. The three e-scooters’ braking system is aided by a combined braking system.
Simple Energy and Ather Energy have equipped their e-scooters with the traditional telescopic fork and monoshock setup. Ola Electric, on the other hand, uses a single fork up front and a monoshock at the rear.
