These electric motorcycles can put many hardcore petrol-powered tourers to shame!
We all know electric vehicles are the future of transportation. And of late the two-wheeler segment has been witnessing an increasing number of electric motorcycles and scooters. The primary advantage of EVs is that the running costs are considerably lower than their petrol-powered counterparts as electricity is much cheaper than petrol.
However, the potential of electric vehicles is limited mainly by battery technology. With the current level of advancement in batteries, you can extract only so much range at a nominal cost. That said, there have been some electric motorcycles that have stood apart because of their incredible range. Here’s our top five:
Verge TS: 300km
Finnish electric bikemaker Verge recently unveiled the Verge TS at the 2019 EICMA. Sure, the novel hubless rear wheel will make heads turn, but what takes the cake is the 85kW motor, which is capable of churning an earth-shattering 1000Nm of torque! As if that wasn’t enough, Verge has ensured its cruiser can travel up to 300km in the city and around 200km on the highway!

The motorcycle also features fast-charging capability with a 100km range per hour of charging. Of course, all that tech will come at a price, as do the rest of the motorcycles in this list. The Verge TS costs EUR 24,990 excluding taxes, which is approximately Rs 19.65 lakh.
Zero SR: 359km
California-based Zero Motorcycles is well known to offer electric motorcycles with a healthy range. The Zero SR comes with a large 18kWh lithium-ion battery. This coupled with a 3.6kWh power tank accessory will ensure a combined range of an impressive 359km in the city and 180km on the highway. The combined range stands at 241km, which is, in fact, better than most of the petrol-powered equivalent bikes.
The Zero SR isn’t just about the range as its motor is capable of a healthy 52kW of power and 157Nm of torque. It takes 12.1 hours to charge completely using a standard charger. The accessory fast-charging option ensures a 3.3-hour charge time to reach 100 per cent. As far as the pricing is concerned, it starts from CAD 20,595 (around Rs 11.11 lakh) ex-showroom.
Energica Ego+ 400km
Italian motorcycle brand Energica unveiled the Ego+ at this year’s EICMA as a part of its 2020 lineup update. What’s really impressive about this motorcycle is that its huge 21.5kWh lithium-polymer battery is capable of offering a 400km range in the city! That’s basically going from Mumbai to Pune, and then returning with still some battery charge left to do your everyday commute!
On the highway, it can cover up to 180km, and when it comes to mixed riding conditions, the range stands at a decent 230km. Complementing the battery is a 107kW motor, which can produce 215Nm of torque, and a top speed of 240kmph. The motorcycle also gets all sorts of electronics such as four riding modes, traction control with six levels of intervention, and ABS. Another interesting aspect about this motorcycle is that using a DC level 4 fast charger, the battery can ensure a 400km range in just an hour of charging!
Arc Vector: 436km
The Arc Vector from UK-based Arc Vehicle is the most radical-looking motorcycle in this list. It features hub centre steering with front swingarm and chiselled bodywork with a neat swooping design line going all the way from the headlamp to the tail section. Being a 399-unit limited edition motorcycle, Arc has spared no expense in equipping it with top-spec mechanicals. It comes with a monocoque chassis, Ohlins TTX adjustable front and rear suspension, carbon fibre swingarms and disc brakes with Brembo Stylema calipers.
The bike uses a clutchless single gear transmission to reach its claimed top speed of 200kmph. 0-100kmph sprint is achieved in just 3.2 seconds and the bike gets a range of 436km with a 40-minute charging time using fast-charging system. To complete the sci-fi look, it even comes with a bespoke helmet that features heads-up display! With such premium components and exclusivity, it commands a pretty hefty price tag — USD 118,000 (around Rs 84 lakh)!
Brutus V9: 450km
Cruisers are known to be laid-back mile-munchers and the Brutus V9 is an electrifying take on this genre. This motorcycle from the US gets a ginormous 33.7kWh battery pack, which is reported to offer around 450km range in the city and 337km on the highway!
The top speed is restricted to around 185kmph and it produces an impressive 375Nm of torque at the motor. With the V9, you can look as cool as those Harley riders and be environmentally friendly too!
