Which one’s a better no-nonsense commuter motorcycle on paper?

TVS has launched the Radeon BS6 in the country at Rs 58,992. Its design is quite similar to the Hero Splendor Plus BS6, which starts from Rs 59,600. So even price-wise, they’re quite close to each other. So let’s see which one’s superior, specification-wise:

Engine

Torque

The TVS Radeon BS6 obviously has the upper hand here since it comes with a bigger motor. In terms of power, the Splendor isn’t too far behind despite its smaller engine, which is pretty impressive. However, in terms of torque, the Radeon will definitely feel more sprightly. It not only produces more torque but the peak torque arrives at 1500rpm earlier, thus ensuring better pickup from standstill. The Radeon was already peppy and now, the BS6 version produces its peak torque at 500rpm earlier than the BS4 version, which should theoretically make it even livelier.

As far as mileage is concerned, TVS claims the Radeon BS6 offers 15 per cent higher mileage than the BS4 version. We’ve already done a real-world mileage test of the Radeon BS4, and the results are shocking to say the least. So expect the Radeon BS6 to be even more fuel efficient. On the other hand, the Hero Splendor Plus BS6 is also claimed to offer better mileage than its BS4 counterpart but the company hasn’t mentioned the exact percentage. We haven’t tested the BS4-compliant version either. That said, it features an idle Stop Start System (i3S) which turns off the engine while idling in traffic, to conserve fuel. Pulling the clutch lever turns it back on again. Tthe Radeon features an Econometer which turns on either the Eco light or the Power light depending on your riding style, thereby giving you a fair idea about how fuel-efficient your riding is.

As far as the suspension and tyres are concerned, both bikes get a similar setup. But when it comes to braking, the Commuter Bike Of The Year edition of the Radeon BS6 gets an optional 240mm disc which should offer a considerably improved braking prowess compared to the 130mm drum unit. In the Radeon, the rear comes with a smaller 110mm drum whereas the Splendor Plus BS6 features a larger 130mm drum, which should offer better bite, theoretically speaking.

The longer wheelbase of the Radeon offers it better stability out on the highway. It also gets a much higher ground clearance which will come in handy when going over really bad roads. The 780mm seat on the Radeon is accessible enough for most riders. On the flip side, the bike is 6kg heavier than the Hero Splendor Plus BS6 and some riders may feel the heft, especially while taking the bike out of tight parking spaces.

Price & Verdict

TVS Radeon BS6

Hero Splendor Plus BS6

Standard model: Rs 58,992

Kick start variant: Rs 59,600

Commuter Bike Of The Year edition, drum: Rs 61,992

Self start version: Rs 61,900

Commuter Bike Of The Year Edition, disc: Rs 64,992

Self start with i3S tech: Rs 63,110

The TVS Radeon definitely offers better value for money as despite having a bigger, more powerful and torquier engine, the base variant undercuts the Splendor Plus BS6 by Rs 608. It also features an electric start as standard, which is extremely convenient. Even though the Commuter Bike Of The Year edition of the Radeon BS6 is dearer than the top-end version of the Splendor Plus BS6 by Rs 1,882, we’d still recommend this as it gets a 240mm petal front disc.

Overall, the Hero Splendor Plus BS6 is a good choice if you want a no-nonsense commuter motorcycle that’s known for its reputation of having a bullet-proof build quality. But if you want a more well-rounded, peppier commuter motorcycle, then the Radeon BS6 is the one to go for.
