Looking to add a fast scooter to your garage? Have a closer look at these two options in these set of detailed images
The launch of the Yamaha Aerox 155 for the Indian market is quite surprising. It is not only the most powerful scooter in the premium 150cc scooter space in India, but it’s also priced well at Rs 1.29 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). This makes it just Rs 1,500 more expensive than its direct rival, the Aprilia SXR 160. So, which one would you pick if you were on the lookout for a fast yet practical scooter? Read on to find out.
The design language of the two scooters are poles apart. The Yamaha Aerox is a blend of a scooter and a step-through, aiming to offer the best of both worlds. Its sharp styling coupled with the exciting colour options, could make it a hit amongst the younger audience. Meanwhile, Aprilia follows a maxi-scooter style approach with the SXR 160. The design is sporty but doesn’t quite tug at your heartstrings. Neither does it appeal to mature riders.

The Aerox features a dual-LED headlight with LED DRLs which dominates the front fascia As for the turn indicators, they are integrated into the side panels. This headlight setup is unique yet easily recognisable. On the other hand, the Aprilia SXR 160 offers a tri-LED headlight setup, a typical Aprilia trait.
Both the scooters come equipped with LCD consoles, however, the Yamaha Aerox 155 gets bluetooth connectivity as standard, with Yamaha’s Y-Connect app. This gives users access to features like call/SMS alerts, phone battery status for the console, a fuel consumption tracker, maintenance recommendations, last parking location, and rev counter display. The Aprilia SXR 160, on the other hand, has a simpler LCD display. Even though Aprilia offers bluetooth connectivity with the SXR as an option, it doesn’t quite match up to the Aerox 155’s feature list.
The Yamaha Aerox 155 shares its VVA-equipped 155cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, with the R15. However, it’s been detuned to produce 15PS at 8000rpm and 13.9Nm at 6500rpm. Despite this, it’s currently the most powerful scooter in its segment. The Aprilia SXR 160 employs the same 3-valve 160cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine as the SR 160, producing 10.9PS at 7,000rpm and 11Nm at 5,750rpm.
Yamaha has equipped the Aerox 155 with telescopic fork up front and dual shocks at the rear. The Japanese bike maker is also offering KYB Ultimate Series gas-charged dual shocks as an optional extra. Meanwhile, the Aprilia SXR 160 comes with a telescopic fork up front and a single shock absorber at the rear.
The braking setup on both these scooters is identical: a disc brake at the front and a drum unit at the rear, aided by single-channel ABS. But while the Aerox 155 gets a 230mm disc, the SXR 160 gets a 220mm unit.
The Yamaha Aerox 155 employs 14-inch wheels at both ends shod with a 110-section tyre at the front and a 140-section tyre at the rear. In comparison, the Aprilia SXR 160 uses 120/70-12 setup at both ends.
Despite not being a true-blue maxi-scooter, the Yamaha Aerox 155 offers a decent 24.5 litres of underseat storage, enough to gobble up a full-face helmet. The Aprilia SXR 160 has a lot less storage, partly because it shares its chassis with the SR 160. But it’s enough to accommodate a half faced helmet. Also worth mentioning is the glovebox in the front apron which has enough space for your knick-knacks.
