Does the fancy segment-first tech make it a better overall proposition than its predecessor? Find out in our image gallery
At the launch event of the Yamaha FZ-X, the Japanese manufacturer surprised us with the unveiling of the Fascino 125 Fi Hybrid. It is the country’s first hybrid scooter and the only one of its kind in the current scooter segment. Do the hybrid system and new features make it a better product overall? We explain in images:
The silhouette of the Fascino 125 Fi Hybrid is still the curvy one as before. The new black colour scheme with gold highlights really brings out the scooter’s retro flair.
Yamaha has updated the scooter with an all-LED headlamp, which looks much more modern than the older halogen unit. Its spread and throw are good but the brightness levels aren’t as much as the LED headlamp on the Suzuki Access 125.
The instrument cluster is now a fully digital unit unlike the analogue layout in its predecessor. It shows all the run-of-the-mill information, but we’d have liked it better if it featured details like real-time mileage and distance-to-empty readouts. More importantly, it also gets smartphone connectivity in the higher-end variants, which lets the rider access features such as answer back, ride history, last parked location, hazard lights, and parking records.
The overall fit and finish levels of the switchgear as well as the body panels feel better than the Yamahas of the past.
The biggest update is its powertrain. Now it gets a mild-hybrid system, thanks to the electric motor that assists the scooter when it accelerates from standstill.
In our tests, it accelerated from 0-80kmph in 16.89 seconds, which is 0.95 seconds quicker than the 2020 model. There’s a healthy mid-range torque boost, making the engine feel sporty.
Thanks to the healthier mid-range and hybrid tech, the mileage figures in the city have also gone up. In our tests, it returned 68.75kmpl, which is 2.83kmpl more than the 2020 model.
While the 2020 Fascino offered a supple ride quality, this one’s a tad firm. The bumps can be clearly felt, and the rear monoshock’s harsh rebound tends to heave you off if you aren’t careful while riding over bumps.
While the braking hardware has remained unchanged, the brake lever feel in the dealer scooter felt a bit spongy as it may not have bled properly. We’ll be able to gauge its efficacy better once we get our hands on the media unit.
Despite the new features, the Fascino 125 Fi Hybrid still tips the scales at 99kg, making it by far the lightest scooter in its class. This makes it a breeze to manoeuvre in traffic or in tight parking spots.
All in all, the new features in the Yamaha Fascino 125 Fi Hybrid have made the scooter a much better offering than its predecessor. While its suspension re-tune is a bit of a bummer, the updated Fascino is still good enough if you’re looking for a snazzy-looking, light, agile and fuel-efficient 125cc scooter.
