Can the new Fascino challenge the domination of the Access 125?
Yamaha India did something none of us could have fathomed with the launch of the new Fascino 125 Hybrid. Not only is it the first mild hybrid scooter in the country, but the Japanese bikemaker has managed to price it aggressively. But is it enough to challenge the dominion of the Suzuki Access 125? Let’s find that out with this image comparison:
The Yamaha Fascino continues to flaunt the same Euro-esque styling as the previous model. The long, swooping lines and curvy panels are matched with equally flamboyant colour options. On the other hand, the Suzuki Access 125 has kept things simple, and the design has remained largely unchanged in over a decade of its existence.
The Yamaha Fascino 125 Disc variant is armed with an LED headlight and even an LED DRL while the drum variant uses a halogen unit. Suzuki too offers an LED headlight, however, there’s no DRL for the Access 125.
The Yamaha Fascino 125 Hybrid (disc) now comes with a bluetooth-enabled instrument console, something that is slowly becoming a norm across the segment. With the Yamaha Motorcycle Connect X, riders can access ride history, parking location, and even hazard lights. But this isn’t as comprehensive as the Yamaha Y-Connect app seen on the Yamaha FZ-X or even the Suzuki Access 125’s Ride Connect app. Not only does the Suzuki’s console display phone calls and messages, but it even has turn-by-turn navigation with an ETA update.
Yamaha has incorporated the automatic stop and start system on the Fascino 125 to make things a tad easier in the traffic. The engine shuts down itself when idling for long durations and a simple twist of the throttle breathes life back into it. On the other hand, the Access 125 has opted for a more traditional route with the integrated engine kill and start switch.
The Yamaha Fascino 125 Hybrid gets a 125cc, fuel-injected motor developing 8.2PS at 6500rpm and 10.3Nm at 5000rpm. This 0.6Nm boost in torque comes courtesy the new electric motor which assists the engine in acceleration. Suzuki’s 124cc single-cylinder engine develops a respectable 8.7PS at 6750rpm and 10Nm at 5500rpm with no electric motor assist.
Suspension equipment on both the scooters is basically identical, with a telescopic fork up front and a swingarm-mounted monoshock at the back.
The Yamaha Fascino 125 Hybrid and the Suzuki Access 125 are offered with drum brakes at both ends as well as a disc brake at the front. As is the norm for two-wheelers below 125cc, both the scooters get a combined braking system.
Yamaha has nailed it with the pricing, keeping the cost of the Yamaha Fascino 125 Hybrid as competitive as before. At Rs 72,000 for the drum variant and Rs 77,530 for the disc variant, the scooter is cheaper by up to Rs 3,000 than the Access which carries a tag of Rs 79,800 (drum) and Rs 81,800 (disc). That said, if you choose to opt for the non-bluetooth version, the prices range from Rs 72,600 to Rs 78,000.
