Yamaha Inaugurates a New High-Tech Production Facility in India

Yamaha India has finally inaugurated a long-awaited manufacturing unit in the country at Vallam Vadagal situated in the outskirts of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd. (IYM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tamil Nadu government in May 2012, about the operations of a new manufacturing unit in the state. This is the first unit by Yamaha that will have a vendor park facility in its area. The new facility is spread across 177 acres of land, out of which, the manufacturing plant covers 109 acres of area leaving 68 acres for its vendor partners. The vendor park is expected to have 9 vendors in total who are planning to invest Rs. 1,000 crore.

It is Yamaha’s third plant in India after its already operational units at Surajpur, Uttar Pradesh and Faridabad, Haryana. Now, with three manufacturing units functional, the company is planning to reach a mark of 2.5 million production units in three years. The new Chennai plant is incorporated with advanced technologies like zero water discharge, recycle/reuse of wastewater and maximum use of sunlight. Initially, Yamaha will work on producing its scooters including Fascino, Alpha, Ray and its 125cc motorcycle, Saluto. Initially, the expected production capacity is of 450,000 units per annum. By 2018, the plant will employ 3,900 employees, increasing its strength from the 2,000 people who are currently working in it.
On the inauguration of the new unit, Hiroaki Fujita, Chairman, IYM, said, "We plan to invest a total of Rs. 1,500 crores in phases till 2018 when the new plant is expected to have a capacity of 1.8 million units.The company has sold 7.4 lakh units in 2014 and we are eyeing double-digit sales growth in 2015. The company is also targeting a significant increase in the domestic market share in the coming three years."
