Yamaha intends to enter scooter segment

Japanese two-wheeler maker Yamaha announced that it will come up with scooters in the Indian market in order to tap the potential in segment. Going ahead with the plan the company is currently conducting a achievability study on the scooter market, which will be completed by the middle of this year. At Delhi Auto Expo Pankaj Dubey, India Yamaha Motor National Business head said that they were studying the market to enter the scooter segment but they had not finalised the product line till now. Yamaha is conducting feasibility study to get an idea about the model to be introduced and possible timeframe of launching the product. The study will also evaluate that whether the company should launch the model from its existing global scooter portfolio or it has to develop a new product accordingly for the Indian market. Yamaha is also focusing on an important fact whether to develop a premium product or mass product The Indian two-wheeler market is comprised about 80 lakh units per annum, of which over 75 per cent is constituted by motorcycles. Yamaha is aiming at 10% market share in the Indian motorcycle segment by 2012. At Auto Expo Yamaha had launched an advanced version of its racing bike YZS-R1 and a limited edition of its 150cc bike YZS-R15.
