The import data suggest that few models of Yamaha MT-125 are imported to India. This is the smallest displacement motorcycle in company’s MT series and is currently available for sale in the European market. The reason for bringing this motorcycle to Indian shores is not clear as it is not expected to be launched in India anytime soon because of its high price. The only possible explanation for bringing this naked machine to India might be for testing and Research & Development (R&D) purposes. The declared import value of a motorcycle is Rs. 4,14,362. However, it has nothing to do with the actual market price of the bike.
Coming to the specifications, MT-125 houses a 124.7cc, single-cylinder, SOHC engine which generates a maximum power of 14.8bhp and a peak torque of 12.4Nm. The mill comes mated to a 6-speed transmission. Built on a Steel Deltabox frame, it gets inverted forks up front and link monoshock suspension at the rear. It also features disc brakes at both the wheels and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) for safety purposes.
Earlier, at the 2016 Auto Expo, the Japanese motorcycle giant had launched its first MT series motorcycle in the Indian market. Named as MT-09, the bike comes with a price tag of Rs. 10.2 lac (ex-showroom, Delhi). It will be brought to the Indian shores as a Completely Built Unit (CBU).
It is a part of company’s marketing strategy to bring powerful and advanced machines to the country. But, bringing MT-125 to India is still a question as the Indian consumers are still not ready to pay such a high price for a 125cc motorcycle, regardless of the features it offers.
