Yamaha is all set with the production version of its MWT-9 three-wheeled concept and it is most likely that the vehicle will be available for sale in 2017. One other interesting aspect to this story is that the concept will go into production almost unaltered. The company will be manufacturing this product under the project called “Cornering Master”. With this three-wheeled bike, Yamaha is aiming to improve the sports riding experience in a completely new category. Previously showcased at 2015 Tokyo Motor Show and EICMA, MWT-9 can also make an appearance at the 2016 Auto Expo. It houses an 847cc engine that generates 115bhp of maximum power.
Hinting towards the production of MWT-9, Mr. Hiroyuki Yanagi, president, Yamaha Motors, said in an official statement, “We are starting our 60th-anniversary celebrations on a high point but we want to continue to exceed expectations again and again. We have a strong desire to deliver a strong performance and that includes two, three and even four-wheeled vehicles.” He added, “We want to extend our technology and grow our customer base. The three-wheelers provide fun and extra safety but the MWT is the first time a motorcycle in the ‘fun’ category has been developed. Three years ago we told you Yamaha was back and we should rightly be proud of our achievements since then, but we must continue.”
A bike news portal, Motorcyclenews had a discussion about this bike with two designers from a different manufacturer who were examining the machine at 2015 EICMA. One of them said, “You can see this is a production specification bike. The quality of the castings is that of a production vehicle rather than a hand-built concept bike. The colours and finish of some panels may change but you can see the switchgear has been modified from the standard MT-09 and looks ready for production right now.”
