India Yamaha Motors, a subsidiary of the Japanese biking giant, is functioning on the modification of its once-popular model, the RX 100 which was the choice of many young Indians in the mid and late 1980's and planning to relaunch it. The company is basically working on engine type and styling. However, it would largely maintain the basic design of the earlier vehicle.
Pankaj Dubey, national business head, India Yamaha Motor, said that they were working on the lines of the RX 100 and were looking to have something of a similar product for India.
One of the main reasons of phasing out the RX 100 was the adoption of stricter emission control norms in the country as the bike was a high polluter and its two-stroke engine had a problem meeting the required norms.
Yamaha will not reintroduce the RX 100 with a two-stroke bike, as India would upgrade to even stricter Bharat Stage IV emission norms in the coming months. However the company is working on a four-stroke version for the bike. According to experts the launch could shoot Yamaha’s volumes multi-fold if the bike is priced in the same category as other entry or commuter level bikes.
