According to reports, India is all set to take over the title of the world's largest two-wheeler market. China, which is home to the world's largest two wheeler market with a recorded sale of 14 million units in 2011, may lose the tag to India due to the Chinese government's regulation on the use of motorcycles in urban centers. And amidst such reports comes Yamaha's ambitious Indian plans. They recently launched their first scooter in India, i.e Yamaha Ray. And the country's massive response to it has lead the company to work on establishing a firm foothold in the nation. Yamaha Motor Corporation of Japan predicted that the demand for two wheelers in China will fall down to about 11.9 million units, while India's two wheeler market is set to become the number 1 with an estimated sales of 14 million units this year, compared to the 13 million units sold last year.

Given the current scenario, they hope to sell one million units by 2014. And to attain the aforementioned target, they intend to roll out more models as they increase their production capacity in India. Furthermore, they will up their production capacity to 2.8 million units per year, which will allow them to turn India into its export hub to other Asian and international markets. They will soon have a plant in Chennai, which will be commissioned by 2014, and thus help Yamaha attain their target figures with the increase in volume. For now, India Yamaha Motors has contemporary facilities in Surajpur (U.P) and Faridabad (Haryana).

Despite the sudden dip in demand for bikes, the scooter segment has continued to grow. And that's where Ray will help Yamaha carve a niche for itself in the Indian market. With Ray, the Japanese company will hopefully scoop a staggering 20 per cent market share of the scooter segment by 2016. With factors like continuous strong consumer spending, population growth, Yamaha's cutting-edge technology and their after-sale service provisions, their enthusiastic Indian dreams don't really qualify as distant.
