- Things We Don't Like
- Retro design resembles the larger Scrambler 1200 and the bike has great fit and finish levels
- Smooth and powerful engine is great for daily commuting and highway rides as well
- Plush ride quality over bad roads and nimble handling abilities

- Misses out on Bluetooth connectivity
- The tall 835mm seat height might not be to everyone's liking
Scrambler 400 X Expert Review
Overview
The Triumph Scrambler 400 X has a great do-it-all nature and can be your one-bike garage. The Scrambler 400 X has a retro design with a premium fit-and-finish. The engine is powerful and tractable, making it suitable for city commuting and highway touring as well. The suspension delivers a plush ride quality over unpredictable roads and is surprisingly agile as well.
Design
The Scrambler 400 X has a retro and rugged design. The bike looks purposeful and has an upright posture. The retro design is complemented by a round LED headlight and round mirrors. The upswept dual barrel exhaust has a distinct look to it and makes the bike look aggressive and rugged. The bike looks and feels much larger than the Speed 400 and has great fit and finish levels. Another positive is that the rider can personalise the tank colour according to their taste.
Engine, Mileage & Performance
The Scrambler 400 X is powered by a liquid-cooled 398cc single-cylinder engine that produces 40PS and 37.5Nm. This engine is refined, has good low and mid-range grunt, and allows the bike to cruise easily on the highway at 110kmph with minimal vibrations.
The bike offers a strong mid-range performance, delivering 30Nm of its torque as early as 3,000rpm, which makes overtaking in higher gears effortless. It's also quite easy to ride in the city, with its ability to cruise comfortably at 50kmph in 5th gear. The clutch is very light and the gear shifts are slick.
Handling & Ride Quality
The suspension is the star of the show when it comes to the handling and ride quality of the Scrambler 400 X. The bike tips into corners surprisingly well with the 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels. The bike feels really lightweight when riding as the wide handlebar provides good leverage for quick and easy direction changes.
The bike would have been even better if it was offered with Metzeler tyres instead of the MRFs it comes with as well as sintered brake pads in place of the organic ones to give a better feel to the brakes.
Comfort
The Scrambler 400 X offers great comfort for city and highway rides. The wide and upright handlebar gives the rider a commanding stance. While the seat height is tall and may not be everyone’s go-to choice, it allows a rider to be in a commanding stance. When it comes to having a pillion behind you, the seat is comfortable and accommodating enough even if the pillion is a large individual. The comfortable riding experience is only hindered by a lack of a windscreen to protect against windblast, which is only noticeable when cruising down the highway.
Features
The Scrambler 400 X is not the most feature-loaded bike in its segment and misses out on a lot of things but gets the essentials. The Analog speedometer adds to the retro appeal of the motorcycle but the tachometer which is situated on the LCD screen is difficult to read. To add convenience the bike also gets a USB charging port to charge and power various devices but misses out on Bluetooth connectivity. The addition of switchable traction control and the ability to disable ABS at the rear helps when you go off-road.
Should you buy
The Triumph Scrambler 400 X is an option that you cannot ignore if you're someone who is looking for the best of both worlds. It has a potent engine, great suspension, and nimble handling abilities that make it an enjoyable motorcycle in the city, out on the highway, and also to tackle light off-road trails. With a price tag of Rs 2.65 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Scrambler 400 X offers good value for money considering its do-it-all nature.
