TVS is an abbreviation of the company’s founder’s name, Thirukkurungudi Vengaram Sundram Iyengar. The brand was first established in 1911, when T V Sundram Iyengar started Southern Roadways Limited, a bus company, which was the foundation of the TVS Group. The brand started its foray into the automotive industry in 1976 when they started manufacturing mopeds from their Hosur manufacturing plant.

TVS is a fully Indian-owned company, and comes under the TVS Group. The brand is headquartered in Hosur and their main manufacturing facility is also located there. Currently, TVS is India’s second largest two-wheeler manufacturer in terms of revenue.

TVS is not owned by Suzuki, but in the precursor to TVS, Sundaram Clayton Limited had entered into a joint venture with Suzuki Motor Corporation. The joint venture was focused on production of motorcycles, with Suzuki’s technical expertise. This partnership with Suzuki resulted in many iconic 100cc two-stroke bikes being produced in India such as the Samurai, Shogun, Shaolin and Supra.
