Yamaha’s YZF-R1 and YZF- R1M supersport motorcycles are soon to be recalled for their gearbox issue. The Japanese manufacturer will announce the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) so that the affected machines can be called back to make them trouble free. The company has halted the sales of these bikes globally.
Both the machines have been found with a faulty gearbox. The transmission of these track-focused machines is not working properly and may not withstand tough prolonged uses that may result in a crash or serious accidents. The components of the gearbox don’t have proper strength to endure the extreme strain conditions and will seize the gearbox once it fails, that eventually may result in rear-wheel locking. The problem seems to be in the second gear, which might break under heavy stress. The improper shifting might also cause this problem. The third and fourth gear are also affected with this trouble and may deform or break under extreme strain situations.

Though it is not confirmed whether the company will rectify the gearbox or replace it, this will be done after the launch of ‘Factory Modification Campaign’. According to Yamaha India, if you are an owner of a 2015 YZF-R1/YZF-R1M, you have to wait for the VIN list or you can contact the Yamaha authorised dealerships to check if your bike is on the list.
2015 Yamaha R1 has priced at INR 25 lac (Ex-showroom) in India.
