Bajaj Chetak is one of the most popular and iconic scooters in the country and with the reveal of new patent designs suggests the launch might just be around the corner
The 90s was a time when everyone you knew owned a Maruti 800, but that was only for special occasions. The true Indian people mover of the 90s was in fact the Bajaj Chetak, not only was it reliable it was also practically social norm. It even fit kids in the foot-well, the perfect affordable family two wheeler.
The scooter was launched in 1972 and was in production till 2006. It was initially powered by a 145cc two stroke engine before it was updated with a four stroke engine of the same displacement in 2002. The engine produced 7.6PS of maximum power and 10.78Nm of peak torque at 3500 rpm and was mated to a left hand 4-speed manual shifter.
As per reports, the Bajaj has already applied for a patent for the Chetak and will be soon launching the scooter. Considering the cult following Bajaj Chetak has during 1990’s, the relaunch of the same brand name might just be a very good move by Bajaj. It is evident that the scooter will have a classic design language to make it appeal to a more mature section of audience and is expected to be powered with a 150cc engine.
The bike will be launched mostly targeting the premium scooters in the segment like Vespa and Aprilia SR150. It’s also been a long time since Bajaj has not come up with a scooter and with the launch of Chetak it aims to get back into the scooter segment.
