New Tiger Explorer is more powerful and features a host of rider aids
Triumph is all set to launch the 2017 version of its flagship adventure motorcycle, the Tiger Explorer XC. While the older version of the bike made its Indian debut at the beginning of 2014, the implementation of BS-IV norms forced Triumph to discontinue the model.
The Tiger range of motorcycles are available with two engine options - the 1200cc and the 800cc. The Explorer, which featured the larger engine, has been due for an update as it missed out on some essential riding features that 800cc Tiger variants received.
The new Tiger Explorer will feature some minor cosmetic upgrades like a re-designed tank extension and a front headlight cowl. It will be powered by the same 1215cc, three-cylinder, four-stroke motor, which is Euro 4-compliant. This re-tuned motor generates 139PS at 9300rpm and 123Nm of peak torque at 6200rpm, as compared to the earlier model which produced 137PS of peak power with 121Nm of torque.
Apart from this, the big Tiger will also receive a host of rider aids and features that will bring it on par with most big adventure tourers out there. It now gets five ride modes, semi-active suspension, switchable ABS, cornering ABS and traction control along with an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit). Triumph may also introduce a range of variants under the Tiger Explorer series, similar to the ones available on the Tiger 800 series, which include the XR, XRx, XC, XCx and the XCa.
Once launched, the Explorer will compete with BMW’s flagship adventure bike, the R 1200 GS, and the Ducati Multistrada 1200 Enduro. With such stiff competition in this segment, we expect Triumph to price the new Tiger Explorer 1200 rather aggressively, possibly with a price tag starting at Rs 18 lakh.
