Kawasaki has finally launched the much-awaited 2019 Ninja ZX-6R at an introductory price of Rs 10.49 lakh (ex-showroom pan-India). The company had commenced pre-bookings for its middleweight supersport in November last year for an amount of Rs 1.5 lakh. Deliveries of the bike are expected to begin in the first week of February. With the launch, the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R becomes the only 600cc supersport to be currently sold in the country.

In terms of styling, the ZX-6R adheres to Kawasaki’s new Ninja H2-inspired design language that is also seen on the Ninja 400. The front is dominated by H2-like twin LED headlamps while the sharply-raked rear end gives away the bike’s sporty intentions. The star of the show, however, is the ZX-6R’s heart. The engine is a 636cc inline-four, liquid-cooled unit that churns out 130PS of power at 13,500rpm and 70.8Nm of torque at 11,000rpm, mated to a 6-speed gearbox. In fact, peak power can be increased by another 6PS with ram-air assist.

The bike’s underpinnings do their bit in making the Ninja ZX-6R a true-blue supersport. Under the bike’s sharp bodywork sits a pressed-aluminium perimeter frame that is suspended on fully-adjustable Showa 41mm inverted SFF-BP (Separate Function Fork – Big Piston) forks at the front and a bottom-link Uni-Trak monoshock at the rear. Bringing the bike to a stop are dual 310mm petal discs at the front and a single 220mm disc at the rear.

Given the bike’s track-focussed nature, Kawasaki is sparing no efforts in offering it with a host of electronic rider aids. These include the KIBS (Kawasaki Intelligent Anti-lock Braking System), KTRC (Kawasaki Traction Control) and bi-directional KQS (Kawasaki Quick Shifter).
As of now, the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R has no competitors in India. The last serious contender in the 600cc supersport segment, the Triumph Daytona 675R, was discontinued back in 2017. It will be interesting to see if buyer interest in the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R translates into decent numbers. We for one cannot wait to ride the ZX-6R and hope it kickstarts the middleweight supersport segment in India again.
