2020 Royal Enfield Classic 350 Spied

Updated engine, new chassis and more!

• Will most likely feature a BSVI-compliant engine.
• Appears to sport minor cosmetic changes like redesigned split seats, new grab rails and a shorter muffler.
• Launch expected early next year.

It’s been a busy few days at Royal Enfield’s camp. With the launch of the Royal Enfield Bullet Trials 350/500 scheduled for today, the company seems to have already turned its attention on its next product: the 2020 Royal Enfield Classic 350/500.

A test mule of the motorcycle was recently spotted in Chennai, hinting at some major revisions. For starters, the biggest change seems to be the addition of a new motor. This doesn’t come as a surprise considering the existing UCE engine doesn’t meet the upcoming BSVI norms, which are set to come into effect next year. Spy images reveal that the chain drive is on the left-hand side and the engine fins appear to be different, hinting at a new motor. 

Also missing here is a kick lever. We expect the updated engine to be based on the Himalayan’s new 411cc single-cylinder motor, so expect it to be more refined and powerful than the current-gen motor. 

Take a closer look and you’ll notice the redesigned chassis and swingarm. The gas-charged rear shocks have also been replaced with more conventional units for cost-saving. The engineers at RE have now positioned the front disc on the right side of the wheel.

We won’t blame you for mistaking the new motorcycle with the current-gen one, though. It continues to maintain the same trademark design the Classic series is often associated with. However, to add a bit of modernity, the tail light now is reported to be an LED unit, which could indicate that the headlamp might also be an LED unit.

Additionally, the bike seems to be sporting redesigned split seats, new grab rails and a shorter muffler. 

So, when we can expect the Royal Enfield Classic to launch? How does early next year sound? And how much will it cost? We expect it to be around Rs 1.7 lakh (ex-showroom). Once launched, it’ll compete against the Jawa, Jawa 42, Bajaj Dominar 400 UG and the UM Renegade Sports.
