China-based EV company Horwin doubles the range, halves the range anxiety for its electric scooter
Last year Chinese e-mobility brand Horwin launched the SK3 electric scooter. The e-scooter looked fantastic with a blend of modern day tech and a muscular, maxi scooter-like design. That said, like most electric scooters today, the SK3 too had an underwhelming range of just 80km to the charge. For 2022, however, Horwin seems to have cracked the code and the SK3 offers a claimed range of 160km. Pair that with its option to holster a second battery pack, you’re in for a shocking 300km claimed range!
Two batteries? Sure the mind-blowing 300km range sounds great but is it worth the weight? Well surprisingly, Horwin claims the SK3 weighs only 115kg and while it's unclear whether this is with both batteries onboard or just the primary one, it sounds reasonable in our opinion. Even if we assume the weight is with just one battery pack and the second one would add another 20kg to the load, the scooter weighs in below 140kg. That’s roughly what you’d expect from a maxi scooter like the Yamaha Aerox 155 (124kg) and a whole adult human being less than the BMW C 400 GT, which weighs a whopping 214kg!
That said, the 3.1kW motor with a peak power output of 6.2kW, delivers a top end around 90kmph and the weight of the extra battery will theoretically alter that performance to a certain extent. Needless to say the second battery also eats into the underseat storage a fair bit. The battery pack itself is a 72V 36Ah lithium-ion battery but more clarity is awaited on the charging time of these new units.
The design of the SK3 remains more or less unchanged and continues to impress. The brawny front apron houses bi-LED headlights flanked by the turn indicators as before, but now gets a new smoky windscreen and a more prominent spine running along the floorboard. The scooter features telescopic forks and dual rear shock absorbers, coupled with 14-inch alloys. The overall silhouette of the SK3, however, reminds us of the Aprilia SXR 160 and BMW C 400 GT.

In terms of features the SK3 comes equipped with a full TFT instrument cluster with smartphone connectivity. Like the BMW, this too gets keyless access but unlike the ICE maxi scooter, the SK3 also gets cruise control. However, considering the SK3 retails in Europe from 4500 Euros onwards (roughly Rs 3.63 lakh, before taxes), the prospects of it ever hitting Indian shores are precisely zero. That said, if you’re in the market for a feature-laden and performance-packed electric scooter, we’d suggest you take a look at the Ather 450X and Ola S1.
