The new KTM adventure bike will give the Himalayan 450 some tough competition
The 2024 KTM 390 Adventure has been spotted testing again in Europe. It features a completely new design and many other changes compared to the current-gen KTM 390 Adventure. Let’s go over them one by one.
The first thing that stands out is the design, the new 390 Adventure comes with a completely different design with vertically stacked projector headlights that look somewhat similar to the one we’ve seen on the new gen larger-capacity Dukes like the Duke 990 and 1390 Super Duke R. The bike also features a taller windscreen and a rally tower-like TFT instrument cluster (likely with connectivity and navigation) along with a long single piece contoured seat that gives the bike a distinct character, like the KTM 450 Rally Replica.
This is combined with the wide handlebars with knuckle guards and slightly rear-set footpegs like standard ADVs (which should help the rider grab onto the bike properly while standing up and riding). The ADV overall has a very slim look with a sleek, long rear section, typical of rally bikes. The exhaust on the test mule is an underbelly one but this is not likely to be carried forward to production versions of the bike. This is because a full-length exhaust is much better in ensuring good water-wading potential as compared to an underbelly one which is closer to the ground.
The new 390 Adventure will be powered by the same engine we’ve seen on the new Duke 390. Which is a 398.63cc liquid-cooled, single cylinder motor that produces 46PS at 8500rpm and 39Nm at 6500rpm but with a different tuning to suit the ADV character of the 390 Adventure.
In terms of underpinnings, the 2024 390 Adventure comes with a split-trellis frame, but with a different subframe and swingarm, and longer travel suspension to suit the bike’s ADV character. The bike features adjustable inverted forks as evident by the adjusters, and the rear monoshock is an offset unit (also adjustable, likely in compression and rebound).
The bike rolls on what looks like a larger 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoke wheel wrapped with dual purpose tyres. The current KTM 390 Adventure comes with a 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel setup. Braking duties are handled by disc brakes at the front and rear, and the rotor design looks like the ones used in the previous gen Dukes. This is because spoke wheels wouldn’t allow the use of lightweight rotors like we have seen on the new gen dukes as they have different mounting points.
KTM is likely to debut the new 390 Adventure at EICMA 2024 in Milan, Italy, and we expect it to be priced around Rs 3.80 Lakh (ex-showroom). The bike will go up against the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 and the upcoming Hero XPulse 400.
