One of the most popular e-commerce websites in India, Amazon, has started delivering packages on Bicycles instead of bikes. Currently, this pilot programme takes place in 5 major cities of India which are Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai. The company has already seen the success of a programme in one of the reputed cities of United States i.e. Manhattan. Along with the delivery of packages on bicycles, the company also promises to deliver the packages within 1 hour.
The major advantage of delivering a package on the bicycle is cutting down of a delivery time as it is easier to get away from a heavy traffic with the use of a bicycle as compared to bikes. This step is an environment-friendly which helps in reducing carbon footprint.
Samuel Thomas, Director of Transportation, Amazon India said “Being conscious of the environment we live in, reducing carbon footprint is the need of the hour. We have taken this eco-friendly step by introducing bicycle deliveries, which also helps delivery associates with easier access in congested metro cities”.
In terms of cost, bicycles are cheaper than bikes and more useful in highly populated countries like India, where inadequate traffic increases the time of travelling from place to another within a city. Bicycles not only help in reducing cost, it also reduces the time and provides more accuracy. Devangshu Dutta, chief executive officer of consultant Third Eyesight also stated “In India, the density of population is higher; hence bicycles will help them reduce cost compared to bikes (motorcycles). Similarly, in the US, since the market is less dense, air cargos will help them reduce cost, reduce the time and improve accuracy”.
Ahead of time, Amazon is also planning to deliver the products through drones, which is a revolution in the e-commerce industry and environment-friendly too.
