Piaggio India says that its entry-level Aprilia scooter will soon be available only in the drum brake variant
Piaggio India, which oversees the Aprilia and Vespa brands in India, has revealed that it will be discontinuing the disc brake variant of the Storm 125 scooter from July 1, 2022. The entry-level Aprilia scooter will only be on sale with drum brakes and that variant cost Rs 99,296 (ex-showroom Pune) as of May 2022.
The Storm series was launched in May 2019 to appeal to the masses as a budget-friendly option to the popular SR series. However, following the recent price hikes across Aprilia’s line-up, the prices of the entry-level Storm series too felt far-fetched. As of May 2022, the now-outgoing disc brake variant of the Storm 125 was priced at Rs 1,04,952 (ex-showroom Pune).
While there is no official statement on why the Storm 125 disc brake variant is being discontinued, it can be speculated that this scooter might not have been in demand owing to its current price tag of Rs 1.09 lakh (ex-showroom Pune), which implies that it has undergone two massive price hikes in two months.
This asking price for an entry level scooter does not make it value for money, especially when compared to its competitors, as the feature-loaded TVS NTorq 125 XT is priced at Rs 97,061. Even though the disc brake variant of the Storm 125 gets the boot, the drum brake variant will likely still be pricey for what, at the end of the day, is still a 125cc scooter.

The Storm 125 is powered by a 124.45cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine that produces 9.92 PS and 9.6 Nm which is also featured in the Aprilia SR 125 and Vespa ZX. It also competes against other entry-level 125cc scooters including the Hero Destini 125, Honda Activa 125, Suzuki Access 125 and Yamaha Fascino 125.
