Is it finally time for the Apache to hand over the crown to the Pulsar? Let’s find out
The TVS Apache RTR 160 4V has been the reigning champion of the 160cc segment. However, now Bajaj has entered the segment, challenging the might of the RTR with the new Pulsar N160. We were impressed with the bike during our first ride, but is it as impressive when pitting against the RTR 160 4V? Here’s our vbox test data to give you an insight:
Acceleration:
Bajaj Pulsar N160 |
TVS Apache RTR 160 4V |
|
0-60kmph |
5.24s |
5.58s |
0-80kmph |
9.44s |
9.84s |
0-100kmph |
16.55s |
18.34s |
30-70kmph |
6.13s |
6.43s |
40-80kmph |
8.14s |
8.71s |
Considering that the Apache RTR 160 4V makes 1.55PS more and is 6kg lighter, it is surprising that the N160 beats it. While the RTR does manage to stay close till 80kmph, post that, the Pulsar just shoots, widening the gap by 1.21 seconds. So, how is the Pulsar managing this?
A big credit goes to the tuning of the Pulsar N160’s engine. It has abundant torque through the rev range and happily goes all the way to the redline which helps it not just ace the 0-100kmph sprint but also the roll-on acceleration tests.
Now, even though the Apache makes power, it isn’t as accessible as the Pulsar, nor does the engine rev as quickly as the Pulsar which costs the bike precious time.
Coming to the tractability, with the Pulsar, you can ride at as low as 20kmph in 5th gear. And while the RTR 160 4V too is friendly in the city, and has the advantage of the Glide Through Traffic (GTT), it is as docile as the Pulsar, and requires you to work the gearbox to make your way through the city.
Braking:

80-0kmph |
33.91m |
38.36m |
60-0kmph |

21.51m |
The Bajaj Pulsar N160 triumphs over the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V in this aspect too. Of course, partly because the Pulsar has a dual-channel ABS system unlike the RTR which features a single-channel ABS unit. Furthermore, the Pulsar has better feedback at the levers than the Apache, which gives you a better control over the braking. That said, the Apache still has the better initial bite among the two bikes.
Fuel Efficiency:

|
City |
59.11kmpl |
47.61kmpl |
Highway |
44.38kmpl |
49.80kmpl |
Thanks to the tractability, the Bajaj Pulsar N160 has almost 12kmpl more mileage in the city than the Apache RTR 160 4V. However, things change when you leave the urban jungle. The Apache’s performance advantage along with better breathability means that you can hold highway speeds at lower rpm compared to the Pulsar, which results in better mileage on the highway.
Verdict
Bajaj Pulsar N160 |
TVS Apache RTR 160 4V |
Single-channel: Rs 1,22,854 Dual-channel: Rs 1,27,853 |
Rear drum: Rs 1,21,628 Rear disc: Rs 1,23,735 BT disc: Rs 1,26,451 Special Edition: Rs 1,27,825 |
(both ex-showroom Delhi)
The Bajaj Pulsar N160 clearly takes the win here. It has an engine that not just outperforms the Apache in terms of performance, but is also equally friendly in the city. Furthermore, the Pulsar is also better equipped to shed speeds quickly and safely, thanks to the dual-channel ABS system. So, if you want a bike that’s great for everyday duties and can handle some spirited riding, the N160 is the way to go.
