The home grown company Bajaj Auto Limited is facing sales decline every month, it already has lost its number 2 position to Honda and they need something solid to recover the lost share. Rajiv Bajaj has already made it clear that Bajaj will focus on bikes and will try to generate maximum out of it. The latest reports suggest that Bajaj might launch a new cruiser, which is one of the segments, which is yet to explored in India. Right now, Bajaj Auto is the only brand in India, which offers a cruiser priced below Rs. 1 lakh. Bajaj sells its Avenger 220 DTS-i at Rs. 79,478 (ex-showroom New Delhi). Other entry level cruisers in the market are Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 and 500, but they costs high in comparison to the Avenger. Bajaj may fill this gap with its new cruiser, whose concept might be shown at the upcoming Auto Expo.
Bajaj is known for launching products with relatively low pricing and the company achieve it by sharing platforms, engines and technologies in its different products. So, the new cruiser prototype is expected to have a completely new design with a tweaked Avenger platform, while it will continue to get its power from Pulsar family engines.
To offer a range of all new Cruisers, Bajaj might launch it with different engine options. A lower cost version, which will be priced around Rs. 1 lakh will share the engine with Pulsar 200NS, while a more powerful version will share its engine with the upcoming Pulsar 375 and priced around Rs. 1.5 lakh.
Bajaj Pulsar 200NS sports a 199.5cc, 4-stroke, liquid cooled, single cylinder engine with four valve and triple spark technologies, which churns out a maximum power of 23.2bhp @9500rpm and a peak torque of 18.3Nm @8000. We are expecting that Bajaj might tweak the engine a bit to make it behave more like a cruiser. However, the power figures are sufficient for both commuting and cruising. On the other side, details of the 375cc engine still remains sketchy, though it will be introduced with the same configuration along with the advantage of electronic fuel injection to increase the performance and fuel efficiency. The engine is expect to deliver a maximum power output of 40-41bhp which will make it powerful than the 500cc cruiser offered by RE.
So, get ready to experience the all new cruising machines from the house of Bajaj, these might be right there at 2014 Auto Expo.
