Tamil Nadu health department is all set to launch bike ambulance service in the state. This is being done to reduce the number of deaths due to road accidents in the region. According to TOI, in the first phase, these ambulances will be launched in cities like Chennai and Kumbakonam on the festival of Mahamaham (February 22). The bikes can deliver quick service and can easily cut through congested areas where four-wheelers will have problems. Presently, Bengaluru has bike ambulance service that was started in the fiscal, 2015-16. Following this, Maharashtra Government has also announced in September 2015 that it will be starting this service in this year.
A senior official of Tamil Nadu health department said, "The golden hour principle is essential while dealing with road accidents. In urban areas, precious time is lost in traffic and at times, the victim loses his or her life. A bike ambulance could be the game changer." He added, "The bike rider will be trained paramedic. The paramedic is expected to reach the accident spot within minutes of receiving information and provide basic first aid and resuscitation to the victim."
Speaking about bike ambulances in Bengaluru, Mr. U.T. Khader, minister for Health and Family Welfare, Karnataka, said, “The paramedic will reach the spot in ten minutes and give first aid and start resuscitation measures to save the victim till the four-wheeler ambulance arrives." Dr. Deepak Sawant, a member of Maharashtra Legislative Council, said, “The State will benefit from the advanced technology from Britain, which will guide the state administration to keep digital records of patients. Doctors and nurses will be trained and healthcare centres in the rural areas will be strengthened."
