Here’s how Yamaha’s 1st 125cc scooter fares against India’s first BS6-compliant scooter on paper
Yamaha forayed into the 125cc scooter segment with the launch of the new Fascino 125 Fi in the country. It goes head-to-head with India’s first BS6-compliant 125cc scooter, the new Honda Activa 125. Since these are the only BS6-compliant scooters right now, here’s how they fare against each other spec-wise:
Price:
Yamaha has priced its scooter pretty competitively, as the top-of-the-line DLX disc brake variant is just Rs 1,060 cheaper than the alloy wheel variant with drum brakes. Interestingly, this variant from Honda misses out on the stop-start system, which all the variants of the Fascino get as standard.
Features:
One of the reasons why Yamaha has been able to keep the price of the scooter competitive could be because it misses out on certain features such as semi-digital instrument cluster mileage and range indicator, external fuel filler and LED headlamp. That said, all the variants get the stop-start system as well as the silent starter as standard, which isn’t exactly the case with the BS6 Honda Activa 125.
Engine:
While both the Fascino and the Activa have a similar power output, the latter has the upper hand when it comes to torque. However, the peak torque difference isn’t all that much and the Fascino is likely to feel much brisker on the road, thanks to its 99kg kerb weight! It is, in fact, the lightest 125cc scooter in the country! As far as mileage is concerned, the Fascino gets a claimed efficiency figure of 58kmpl. While Honda hasn’t revealed the claimed efficiency figures, the scooter returned 52.63kmpl in the city and 51.23kmpl on the highway in our tests. Expect the Fascino to offer a slightly higher mileage figure in the real world thanks to its lighter kerb weight.
Underpinnings:
While most of the underpinnings are similar, the Fascino gets the advantage of a fatter rear tyre. This should help in better handling compared to the relatively skinny 90-section rear rubber in the Activa. Both scooters get a front disc as an option, which should be considerably superior to its drum counterpart. A combined braking system is standard across both the scooters to comply with the safety norms.
Dimensions:
The Fascino’s slighter greater wheelbase should theoretically help in offering better straight-line stability. On the other hand, the Activa 125 should be able to go over bad roads unscathed, thanks to the 24mm greater ground clearance. Fuel tank capacity is almost similar in both the scooters, so expect a theoretical range of a little over 250km on a full tank of fuel.
Verdict:
Honda has established itself as a strong player in the scooter segment with Activa becoming a household name in the Indian market. On the other hand, Yamaha is a new entrant in the 125cc scooter segment. It does make a strong case for itself with an even more competitive price tag and an equally good set of features, but only a road test between the two scooters will make the final verdict clear. We have tested the Activa 125 and you can read our detailed review here.
