Despite being a maxi-style scooter, it is rather compact

A sporty motorcycle is what most people want, true. But imagine this, a sporty scooter with the hardware and performance capabilities of a 160cc bike. That’s exactly what the Kymco KRV 180i is. Wrapped in a really attractive package, the KRV 180i is also powerful.

The very first thing anybody would notice is how sharp and attractive it is with its maxi-scooter styling. Despite a muscular and beefy demeanour, the KRV 180 is quite compact.

Instead of a spine, it gets a flat floorboard, and the seat is a contoured single-piece unit.  The front gets a sleek-looking twin LED headlight setup.

Onto the heart of the beast. The Kymco KRV 180i is powered by a 175.1cc liquid-cooled engine making a respectable 16.99PS and 15.68Nm. The output seems to be good enough for commutes and also a little bit of sporty riding.  It also features traction control.

To give you a better idea of the engine, the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V makes 17.55PS and 14.73Nm, whereas the Yamaha Aerox 155 produces 15PS and 13.9Nm.

The interesting bit is that the scooter skips on the conventional CVT transmission and makes use of Kymco’s PTM technology, which helps in making it more compact. The PTM tech essentially is a belt-driven motor and features an independent swingarm, similar to the Ather 450X, and offers better weight balance.

In terms of underpinnings, it features a telescopic fork and monoshock suspension setup. Braking hardware on the KRV 180i comprises petal discs - 270mm up front and 234mm at the rear, with dual channel ABS.

Now features are not that fancy, however, it does get keyless access and a fully digital instrument console.

Sadly, the Kymco KRV 180i is unlikely to make its way to our shores. It is priced at Yuan 27,800, around Rs 3.2 lakh (sans taxes). However, if you are looking for a maxi-style scooter in India, you can check out the Yamaha Aerox 155, the more expensive Keeway Vieste 300 or the most expensive BMW C 400 GT.
