The tail-end of the festive season allowed manufacturers to close out 2020 on a positive note
- Bajaj recorded its highest-ever two-wheeler export of 2,09,042 units.
- Royal Enfield was the best improved of the lot with a massive 37 percent year-on-year growth.
- Suzuki saw a modest 1 percent increase in year-on-year sales for December.
Diwali may be long gone but the Christmas/New Year season proved to be a lifeline for the two-wheeler industry, sustaining the healthy sales period that has been running since August. Nearly all manufacturers saw healthy year-on-year growth in December, with Royal Enfield coming off the best of the lot thanks to its massive 37 percent growth figure. The evergreen Classic 350 continues to be a cash cow for the Chennai manufacturer, and new and improved products such as the Meteor 350 are helping the cause too.
Hot on the heels of RE was Yamaha, with a respectable 33 percent improvement. Its more competent and relevant 125cc scooters have helped the Japanese manufacturer’s performance in 2020. Fellow compatriot Suzuki saw a more modest 1 percent increase in domestic sales compared to December 2019. Despite the emergence of a new strain of COVID causing lockdowns across the world once again, Bajaj saw excellent performance in the export market, shipping out 2,09,942 units overseas, marking a 31 percent increase in exports over the same month last year. Its domestic sales also grew by 4 percent, resulting in 19 percent overall growth.
