By 2023, one out of three new bicycles sold in Central Europe will be an E-Bike. This came out as a result of a study conducted by Bosch. The year 2015 saw a hike in sales of electric bikes in Europe with Germany alone selling over 5 lac units reaching an all time high. While Europe is expected to gain 33% in E-Bike sales, Asia and North America are also expected to grow around 27% in the business. Speaking on the topic, Claus Fleischer, Head of Bosch E-Bike Systems, said, "The E-Bike is increasingly becoming a lifestyle product. We remain confident for the years ahead. The potential is enormous. In the medium run, one new bicycle in three sold in Central Europe is likely to be an E-Bike." He added, "One trend to watch is sporting use. Electric is now gaining momentum among mountain bikers."
With the rising pollution levels in India, people are more inclined towards buying E-Bikes nowadays and the government is also supporting them by offering subsidies on the same. Last month, from December 24 to 27, India’s first ever Electric Vehicle Expo took place at Pragati Maidan in Delhi. Being the capital and one of the most polluted regions of India, Delhi witnessed odd-even rule in which 100 Hero Electric Bikes were employed free of cost for last mile connectivity rides. Sohinder Gill, Director, Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV), said, "It is very much possible to have a population of 2 lakh E-bikes within 2 years with little but right support at the ground level. Once the city is well populated with charging infrastructure, it will further incentivise people to opt for E-bikes.”
