Hero Maestro Edge 125 Connected Review: Likes And Dislikes

We explore if the reworked Maestro Edge finally matches the competition in terms of performance and features 

Hero launched the 2021 Maestro Edge 125 with connected features, putting it in a better position to compete with rivals. Updates include a sharper design, LED illumination, and a full-digital instrument console with smartphone connectivity. While all this sounds impressive, the only way we could’ve tested the scooter's mettle was through a road test.

So we did exactly that, and here’s what we liked and what we didn’t about the new Maestro Edge 125

THINGS WE LIKED 

Performance

The Hero Destini and Maestro Edge may share the same engine, but the latter feels lighter and a bit peppier while manoeuvring through city traffic. However, during our test runs, the two scooters were almost identical in performance. But the Maestro's engine feels much more refined than its sibling. It’s less vibey, making the overall ride experience so much better.

Improved Fuel Efficiency 

Hero has also improved the i3S system, which feels more intuitive and kicks in within three-four seconds of the engine idling. This consequently has a direct impact on the Maestro’s fuel efficiency. Our test runs witnessed an improvement of 7.96kmpl within the city and 2.4kmpl out on the highway. That’s one of the best in the 125cc-scooter space. 

Better Features 

The 2021 Maestro Edge 125's feature list is rather impressive. The new LED projector headlight aside, the scooter now comes with a fully digital instrument console with the ‘Hero Connect’ app as standard. You get topple alert, theft alert, find-my-parking and track-my-vehicle functions, and trip analysis.

However, the cherry on the cake is the top-spec ‘Connected’ variant, which features Bluetooth connectivity. It includes vehicle start alert (which instantly notifies the user if someone turns on the ignition), turn-by-turn navigation, missed-call alert, incoming call alert, real-time mileage indicator. 

Funky Styling

The styling may not be to everyone’s liking. But we personally love it, especially in the bright yellow paint scheme. It has a revised front fascia and sharper design, making it look more youthful than before. We reckon this should appeal to the younger audience. 

THINGS WE DIDN’T LIKE

Braking

The Maestro Edge comes equipped with a front disc and a rear drum brake. While the setup has good bite and progression, it lacks feel. So you need to be a little careful when you go hard on the brakes, or else the rear would lock up easily.    

Build Quality 

The build quality on the Maestro is one of its downsides. The quality of plastics used and the fit and finish are not up to the mark, especially when you consider its competition. Panel gaps are inconsistent, and the switchgear feels cheap.

Even the LED projector headlamp isn’t up to the mark. While it has good throw and spread, it lacks brightness. The headlight, too, feels weak. 

Ergonomics 

The foam in the seat is a little too soft for our liking. You tend to sink in, which makes long-distance rides a bit uncomfortable as your back bears the brunt. 

Verdict

The improvements on the Maestro Edge 125 have definitely made it a better scooter in terms of performance, features, and styling. However, there’s still work to be done. The quality, for instance, could have been better, and Hero could have put some thought into the layout of the console. The same goes for the ergo, where the seat could have had better cushioning. That said, we believe the 2021 Maestro Edge is now better equipped to take on its rivals.
