Being the largest two-wheeler manufacturer and leader in motorcycle sales of India, Hero MotoCorp is now aiming to be at the top of the scooter segment as well. Mr. A Srinivasu, Head (National Sales), Hero MotoCorp, expressed that his company is aiming towards being the leading manufacturer in the scooter segment. The market share in scooters is growing consistently for the company for past three months, recording a market share of 20% with around 4.5 lac scooters sold per month. Hero MotoCorp has been competing with Honda since both the giants have parted ways. Honda currently has a scooter sales market share of over 50% but, with the likes of Hero Maestro Edge and Duet introduced in the country, Honda might have to rethink about coming up with some updates in its 110cc Activa.
Both Maestro Edge and Duet are offered with company’s first in-house developed 110cc engine. The 4-stroke, air-cooled mill generates a maximum power of 8.2bhp at 8,000rpm and a peak torque of 8.30Nm at 6,500rpm. Speaking about being the leading scooter manufacturer, Mr. A Srinivasu said, "We are already leader in motorcycles. Our aspiration is for leadership in scooters also." To increase its focus on production and in-house research and development, Hero MotoCorp is all set to inaugurate its new facility soon at Kukas, Jaipur. An investment of Rs. 450 Crore has been done to set up this 'Hero Centre of Global Innovation and Research & Design (R&D)'. The current scooter line-up in the country consists of Maestro, Maestro Edge, Duet and Pleasure.
